Documenting Jazz: An Oral History with Jeni Caruana

Date and Time: Wednesday, 11 December 2019, 4pm – 6pm Venue: Studio B, Spazju Kreattiv Artist Jeni Caruana speaks with Spazju Kreattiv Artistic Toni Sant about painting and drawing at previous editions of the Malta Jazz Festival, along with fellow expat artists Olaug Vethal (1946-2007) and Ebba von Fersen Balzan (1957-2008). Her oral history of this activity, which went on for more than two decades, forms part of efforts to document the Malta Jazz Festival, challenging the narratives surrounding jazz as a male-dominated domain, and the way those affected have been marginalised from this music history. This Art Additives event is part of the Spazju Kreattiv research project documenting works of art in the Fondazzjoni Kreattività permanent collection. It also serves as a prelude for the 2020 edition of Art and Feminism, which will include an edit-a-thon focusing on the appropriate representation of women artists in Malta on Wikipedia. This continues on similar activities in recent years that aim to address the gender gap in the art scene and on the world’s most popular non-commercial website.
