The current COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the huge impact pathogens can have on human life, on our mental and physical health as well as on the economy.

More research is required to identify novel treatments, and means of identifying people at risk of more severe effects upon infection.

Our genes carry the information that can tell us who is at more risk of developing severe effects after infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. Identifying the genes responsible for fighting infection in our immune system may also help in developing new drugs that can mitigate the effects of COVID-19.

TargetID – Novel Drug Targets for Infectious Diseases is a project led by Prof Brendon Scicluna at the University of Malta that is working on the sequencing and analysis of relevant genes from a collection of samples of about 1000 individuals.
