Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 Competition
30 August 2019 - 30 September 2019
Competition call open: Sunday, 1 September 2019 – Monday, 30 September 2019
The annual international photographic contest, Wiki Loves Monuments, aims to promote and share knowledge about heritage sites across the world through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). Wikimedia Community Malta are coordinating the fourth Wiki Loves Monuments competition in Malta in 2019, following up with an exhibition of the competition winners later this year.
The competition encourages individuals to submit photos of heritage sites within their localities/communities to Wikimedia Commons, using a free license, thereby allowing for images to be used and shared freely by anybody. A national jury selects up to 10 entries within each participant country and submits them to the competition’s international jury (composed of photographers, photojournalists and experts in cultural heritage), who select the final winner of the competition.
What can be photographed?
The subject matter of photos submitted to Wiki Loves Monuments must be related to monuments, understood to be any physical structure that was created to commemorate a person or event, or any physical structure of particular significance and relevance to a locality’s cultural heritage. The below are examples of structures that are eligible for this competition (the list is not exhaustive):
- Monuments & statues
- Church-related/religious monuments (e.g. effigies, temples)
- Cenotaphs & memorials
- Fountains
- Graves, tombstones & mausoleums
- Historical landmarks
- Buildings, palaces, bastions, castles etc.
