Art+Feminism 2020

7 February 2020 - 14 May 2020
Art+Feminism is an annual worldwide edit-a-thon to add content to Wikipedia about women artists. Now in its third year in Malta, this edition features a series of curated exhibitions across three sites presenting new works by both established and emerging artists. This initiative is made possible through an ongoing collaboration between Wikimedia Community Malta, the M3P Foundation and Spazju Kreattiv. Other collaborators include Unfinished Art Space and the Gabriel Caruana Foundation. Alongside the exhibitions, activities will include a number of Wikipedia editing workshops and edit-a-thons. These activities will further address the gender gap on Wikipedia whilst highlighting the work of women artists and their contribution to the art scene in Malta. The range of artists spans three generations, from established names to emerging talents. The works show a broad approach to the theme of the exhibition, engaging diverse media and presentational methods. The artists are Mirjana Batinić, Debbie Caruana Dingli, Oksana Chepelyk, Therese Debono, Emma Fsadni, Anna Grima, Gloria Oyarzabal and Enrique Tabone. Curator: Toni Sant Curator’s tour: Friday 6 March at 3pm and Sunday 8 March at 10:30am Dates: Friday, 7 February 2020 – Sunday, 23 August 2020 Venue: Space A and Space B, Spazju Kreattiv   Wikipedia Workshop and Edit-a-thon The goal for this Wikipedia editing workshop and Art+Feminism edit-a-thon is to create and edit Wikipedia pages about women artists in Malta, especially ones involved in the associated exhibitions. Friday 7 February 2020, 5-7pm : Wikipedia Editing Workshop Saturday 8 February 2020, 10am-4pm : Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon Venue: Spazju Kreattiv Theatre Details and joining instructions can be found here.   Strangers in a Strange Land Strangers in a Strange Land is a multidisciplinary exhibition about being female in a world narrated by and designed for men. Visual and multidisciplinary artists react to the status quo of a male-oriented world, exploring how we can re-design, re-narrate and re-see what is said, and what is valued. What can a more feminine perspective contribute, and what does a feminine perspective mean in terms of physical, philosophical and societal outlooks? And does the bilateral depiction of ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ exist, or to what extent is it a false construct? Artists: Barumbara, Etienne Farrell and Charlene Galea, Roxman Gatt, Letta Shtohryn Curator: Margerita Pulè Dates: 14 February 2020 – 8 March 2020 Venue: MUŻA, Valletta and Spazju Kreattiv Theatre
Meet the Artists at Art& Feminism 2020 II
In the second of the artists’ talks in the Art+Feminism 2020 series, Spazju Kreattiv artistic director Toni Sant holds a conversation with all the exhibiting artists. They are among the eight women artists whose work is presently exhibited across Spaces A + B at Spazju Kreattiv. They will give some insight into their individual work at this year’s A+F exhibition while reacting to the idea of championing women artists in Malta, and Internationally, in an effort to address the gender gap in the art scene as well as on Wikipedia, the most popular non-commercial website in the world. Caruana Dingli, Grima, and Tabone were invited to present new work at the 2020 edition of Art+Feminism following last year’s exhibition, which featured their works from the Fondazzjoni Kreattività Art Collection.
